Synthetic mullite fabrication from smectite clays

  • 1. Pernambuco Univ., Recife (Brazil). Dept. de Engenharia Quimica

Description

The technological importance of mullite is mostly due to its refractory properties. Mullite in native form is very rare, and therefore it may be necessary to produced it by synthetic means. Brazil has a large reserve of smectite clays. In this work the process to produce synthetic mullite from these clays by treatment with aluminum sulphate was studied. X-ray analyses has shown the presence of mullite crystals in treated smectite clays of several colours, sinterized at 11000C. By sintering at 13000C, pure mullite was obtained in some colours. Abstract (Portuguese)

(autor)
