Thermal characterization and quantum efficiency of Yb:YAB

Full text: We have been investigating the self-frequency doubling laser material Yb:YAB as an efficient tunable source of infrared and green light. Using the technique of holographic shearing interferometry we have measured the thermal lens strength as a function of absorbed diode pump power for Yb:YAB, under conditions of lasing and with laser action suppressed. We find that there is a significant difference in the thermal lensing characteristics in these two regimes, and we estimate the radiative branching ratio to be 0.85±0.1 for this material
