Effects of electron beam irradiation on carbon-filled polyethylene

Irradiation effects of carbon-filled polyethylene, which was prepared by reprecipitation method, have been studied. Tensile tests under a lamp heating (heating rate: 5degC/min) are performed as post-irradiation experiments to investigate the thermal and mechanical properties of carbon-filled polyethylene such as breaking temperature and elongation. Electron irradiation leads the samples to acquire high heat resistance above 100degC mainly caused by crosslinking formation. The breaking temperature and elongation of unirradiated samples do not appear to depend on the carbon content, whereas, for the irradiated samples, they strongly depend on the content. It suggests that carbon black particles affect the crosslinking process during energetic electron irradiation. (author)
