Computed tomography of the pancreas

Sonography, computed tomography and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography are the prevailing methods of medical imaging in disorders of the pancreas. CT occasionally offers advantages over sonography, which is particularly suitable for basic organ evaluations, as it permits cross-sectional displays of the entire body and image quality is not lessened by accumulations of gas. In images obtained by magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) the vascular system is clearly delineated, owing to which fact they may be provide better information than unenhanced CT scans. In view of the high frequency of respiration-induced artifacts short-term measurements would be desirable but could not yet be carried out in a satisfactory way. Further experience will be needed before any definite judgements can be made about the value of MRT in carcinomas of the pancreas. (orig./GDG)
