The determination of uranium in geological material by delayed neutron counting

Description

An automatic system for transporting samples pneumatically to and from a nuclear reactor is described. This system was designed for the rapid determination of small amounts of uranium in geological material by delayed-neutron counting, and extensive tests have shown that it can meet the requirements of normal mining and prospecting operations. It is possible to obtain a detection limit of about 0,3 ppm of uranium in a sample of 200 mg, with a total analysis time of about four minutes, including sample preparation and data reduction. Only thorium causes a significant interference, and this can be corrected for if required

'n Outomatiese stelsel vir die pneumatiese vervoer van monsters na en van 'n kernreaktor word beskryf. Hierdie stelsel is ontwerp vir die vinnige bepaling van klein hoeveelhede uraan in geologiese materiaal deur die meting van vertraagde neutrone, en uitgebreide toetse het bewys dat dit sal voldoen aan die vereistes wat normaalweg gestel word deur die mynbou en prospekteerwerk. Dit is moontlik om 'n waarnemingsgrens van ongeveer 0,3 dpm uraan te bereik met 'n monster van ongeveer 200 mg en 'n totale ontledingstyd, wat monstervoorbereiding en dataverwerking insluit, van omtrent 4 minute. Slegs torium speel 'n noemenswaardige rol, en daarvoor kan korreksies aangebring word indien nodig
