Measurement of X-ray and RF leakage from high power Klystron

  • 1. Health Physics Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

High power klystrons are used to generate Radio frequency (RF) for producing accelerating electric fields in linacs and cyclic accelerators. A 25 MW klystron amplifier is used to generate accelerating field across the electron linac for the operation of Infra Red Free Electron Laser (IRFEL) at Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore. Measurement of X-ray and RF leakage was carried out around the klystron body and nearby area during its operation. Dose rate beyond permissible levels was observed in the accessible areas. Details of the measurements carried out, results and mitigation methods recommended for reduction in radiation level are described in this paper. (author)
