Production and chemical isolation of californium-252

Description

Some problems of 252Cf production in the high flux research reactor, SM-2, from various target materials are considered. Procedures for calculation of californium build-up and a method for non-destructive inspection of 252Cf contents in irradiated targets are described. Effects of neutron spectra hardness on 252Cf yields are estimated. Some methods of 252Cf chemical isolation from various irradiated targets and californium separation from other transplutonium elements and fission products are also described. The possibilities of 252Cf regeneration and 248Cm extraction from exhausted neutron sources are discussed
