Radwaste system requirements for advanced light water reactors
Description
The Utility/EPRI Advanced Light Water Reactor Program has developed design requirements for nuclear power plants which take advantage of the experience gained over the past 30 years of development and operation. Among the systems/facilities addressed are radioactive waste processing and conditioning. These include gas, liquid and solid waste systems. Highlights of the approach and philosophy are: (1) fuel performance with a very low failure rate, (2) minimization of materials containing cobalt, (3) reduction in the number of components which reduces maintenance and thereby reducing waste generation, (4) gaseous waste holdup by charcoal absorbers, (5) liquid waste processing by filtration and ion exchange, (6) solid waste approach that decouples plant fixed equipment from disposal requirements, and (7) avoidance/minimization of mixed waste. Reliance is placed on mobile systems to condition solid waste for disposal because of the variation and uncertainty in waste disposal regulations, both regional and international
