Description

Features of motion of toroidal bananas are theoretically investigated for asymmetric toroidal magnetic configurations of torsatrons and heliotrons with poloidal field coils. For such configurations the complicated magnetic-field harmonic spectrum is typical, in which both the helical ripple harmonics and poloidal ripple harmonics are present. The conditions are determined under which the charged particles may be trapped in the poloidal ripple-wells of a torsatron / heliotron magnetic field. The analytical expressions for the adiabatic invariants of motion are derived for the toroidally ripple-trapped bananas and for the poloidally ripple-trapped ones. It is found that poloidally ripple-trapped particles are dangerous for confinement because their radial deviations from the initial flux surface in the process of drift are more than twice higher than the radial deviations of usual toroidal bananas
