The trace of the fermion heat kernel in a constant field as a classical problem

Description
The heat kernel of Dirac fermions in a constant gauge field is calculated using the supersymmetric sigma-model. It is shown that not only the index and the anomaly, but also the other characteristics of the Dirac operator are expressed through characteristic polynomials. The trace of the heat kernel can be found by solving a problem in classical mechanics. (orig.)
