The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the reader with: the standards and practices of LLRW disposal in the United States; the experience with shallow land burial and the flawed hypothesis that unsaturated zones in arid environments will provide barriers to groundwater contamination; alternatives to shallow land burial using the reactor containment for assured storage; the anthropocentric approach to LLRW disposal with shallow land burial and the effects on ecological and evolutionary processes
