One-step synthesis and densification of bulk YBa2Cu4O8/Ni composite superconductors

Description
The fabrication of bulk YBa2Cu3O7-x/metal composite superconductors is not easy because of the oxygen-temperature dependence of the YBa2Cu3O7-x phase (the so called 123 phase). A loss of oxygen occurs during consolidation of these composites at high temperature and it is almost impossible to diffuse oxygen through the metallic envelope into the densified compound to restore the required oxygen content for superconductivity above 77 K. In this paper, Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIPing) is used to synthesize and densify superconductive 124/Ni composites in a single step. Different precursors were used to generate various oxygen pressures within nickel cans. The effect of oxygen pressures, HIPing temperatures and type of precursors on the synthesis of the 124 compound was studied
