Description
In this paper the essential characteristics of shell-model calculations in complete (or nearly complete) Ohw spaces with empirical Hamiltonians are discussed. The ingredients of the remarkable successes of such calculations in the p shell and sd shell are analyzed. Opportunities for achieving similar successes for heavier mass regions are explored. It is concluded that certain aspects of the shell-model results for A < 40 nuclei will be difficult to duplicate for large A value
