Volume and surface properties of melts in the system LiCl-NaCl-UCl3
Description
A study of the density and surface tension of fused-salt mixtures of lithium, sodium, and uranium chlorides and a comparison of them with a number of other physicochemical properties enables certain information to be obtained on the structure of the melt. Comparison of the physicochemical properties of binary salt mixtures of uranium trichloride with the alkali metal chlorides (fusibility, density, viscosity, surface tension, and thermodynamic characteristics) has shown that complex ions are formed in the salt mixtures, the stability of the ions being directly dependent on the radius of the alkali metal cation. Similar investigations are being conducted for the first time on three-component systems. From this point of view it was of interest to establish how the characteristic relationships for the variation in the properties of binary salt melts are retained in ternary systems
