Diffusion of radionuclides through deep-sea sediments

Description
Methods for the direct determination of diffusion coefficients in deep-sea sediments were developed and compared. Diffusion coefficients were determined for the nuclides Am, Pu, Np, U, Tc, I, and Cs and the results were compared with values calculated from distribution ratio measurements. Diffusion coefficient and distribution ratio determinations were carried out in a nitrogen-filled glove box on postoxic sediments that had been kept in a nitrogen atmosphere from the time of collection. The values obtained were compared with those for oxic sediments in air. (author)
