Description

The discovery of a new collective magnetic dipole excitation mode in high-resolution inelastic electron scattering on 15664 Gd is discussed in terms of a geometrical two-rotor model and the interacting boson model. Besides in the deformed nucleus 156Gd evidence has also been accumulated for the existence of this model in 158Gd and for the absence in the transitional nucleus 14660Nd in agreement with the theoretical prediction.
