Radiofrequency quadrupole accelerator for physical and applied research

Description

The basic principle behind this type of accelerator is acceleration of charges along the z-axis by periodic shaping of electrodes in the longitudinal direction. The accelerator is integral with the accelerating voltage supply. The electric field produced around the electrodes fulfils three functions, viz., it focuses the beam, accelerates ions and bunches them. Cavity resonators or resonance guides are used as resonators. Accelerators of this type are suitable for ion implantation, for the production of surface layers with a low resistance coefficient and high abrasion strength, as injectors in larger accelerators. Their advantages include a low size and weight, good beam quality, the possibility of accelerating ion beams with flux density. The configuration is described of the acceleration structure and basic characteristics are given. Relations are derived for the dynamics of transverse and longitudinal ion motions.
