Follow-up tests on wet and contaminated AVR fuel elements

Description

Automatic translation: The results of the analyses of the five BE of the AVR sample 53 are presented are presented in summarised form. The five FAs contained contents of up to 1.3 wt.% H2O, which could be removed during drying could be removed during drying up to 200°C. On the surface, the five FAs exhibited a reddish-brown impurity, which was identified as a non-active iron compound. The exact origin of this of this iron impurity has not yet been clarified. Corrosion tests revealed a corrosion factor of 2 (at 900° corrosion) or a factor of 7 (at 800° corrosion under excess hydrogen) higher corrosion rate than was usually found with AVR-BE. The increased corrosion rate can be explained by the catalytic effectiveness of the external contamination.
