Study of the coupling of geochemical models based on thermodynamic equilibrium with models of component transfer as solutions in porous media or fractures
Description
This study is a contribution of analyses possibilities of modelling the transfer of components in the underground taking into account complexes geochemical phenomena. In the first part, the aim and the methodology of existing codes are presented. The transfer codes describe with a great precision the physical phenomena of transport but they are based on a very simple conceptualisation of the geochemical phenomena of retention by the rock. The geochemical models are interested by a stable unity of volume. They allow to compute the equilibrium distribution of the components between the chemical species of the solution, and the solid and gaseous phases. They use important thermodynamic data bases corresponding to each possible reaction. To sum up the situation about the geochemical codes in Europe and United States, a list of about thirty codes describe their method and potentialities. The mathematical analysis of the different methods used in both types of codes is presented. Then, the principles of a modelisation associating the potentialities of the transport codes and the geochemical codes are discussed. It is not possible to think of a simple coupling. A general code must be established on the bases of the existing codes but also on new concepts and under new constraints. In such studies one must always deal with the problem of the reactions kinetics. When the velocity of the reactions is big enough versus the velocity of transport processes, the assumption of local geochemical equilibrium can be retained. A general code would be very cumbersome, expensive and difficult to use. The results would be difficult to analyse and exploit. On the other hand, for each case study, a detailed analysis can point out many computing simplifications without simplifying the concepts

Cette etude est une contribution a l'analyse pour la modelisation du transfert d'elements dans les milieux souterrains en tenant compte de phenomenes geochimiques complexes. Les objectifs et la methodologie des modeles existants sont presentes. Les modeles de transfert decrivent les phenomenes physiques de transport mais ils sont bases sur une conceptualisation globale des phenomenes geochimiques de retention par le milieu. Les modeles geochimiques s'interessent a une unite de volume stable. Ils permettent de calculer la repartition a l'equilibre des elements entre differentes especes chimiques de la solution, de phases solides ou de phases gazeuses. Leurs calculs s'appuient sur des bases de donnees thermodynamiques correspondant a toutes les reactions possibles. Une liste descriptive d'une trentaine de modeles geochimiques fait le point sur ce qui est couramment utilise en Europe et aux Etats-Unis. L'analyse mathematique des differentes methodes utilisees dans les deux types de modeles est presentee. Les principes d'une modelisation associant les potentialites des modeles de transport et des modeles geochimiques sont discutes. Il n'est pas possible d'envisager un couplage simple. Un modele general doit etre elabore sur la base des modeles existants, mais aussi sur de nouveaux concepts et il doit repondre a de nouvelles contraintes. La question de la cinetique des reactions doit toujours etre posee. Lorsque la vitesse des reactions est tres grande devant celle des phenomenes de transport l'hypothese de l'equilibre geochimique local peut etre retenue. Un modele tres general serait tres lourd, difficile et cher d'emploi. Ces resultats seraient difficiles a analyser et a exploiter. Par contre a chaque cas d'etude, une analyse approfondie peut mettre en evidence d'importantes simplifications non pas dans la conceptualisation des phenomenes, mais dans la methode de calculFiles
