Does the 17 keV neutrino indicate Le-Lμ+Lτ symmetry?

  • 1. Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, Maryland Univ., College Park, MD (United States)

Description

It is argued that the existence of a 17 keV neutrino reported in recent beta decay experiments, along with the MSW resolution of the solar neutrino puzzle, may be indicating a spontaneously broken global Le-Lμ+Lτ symmetry within the see-saw picture for neutrino masses. The simplest realization of this idea requires SU(2)LxSU(2)RxU(1)B-L gauge symmetry with a low scale for the right-handed W's and a radiative mechanism for neutrino Dirac masses. (orig.)
