Metastable Cadmium (53P1) production in the Cd+-Na charge-exchange collision
Description
The 326.1 nm emission cross section for the collision process Cd+ +Na -> Cd(53P1) + Na+ was measured in the energy range 1.5-4.9 KeV. It decreases monotonically from 5 to 2x10-15 cm2. Due to a near degeneracy in energy, this channel presents a much larges cross section than all others (except 53P0 and 53P2, which are highly metastable). This justifies the neglect of the cascade mechanism for populating the 53P1, state and, consequently, allows the identification of the 326.1 nm emission cross section with the 53P1 charge-exchanger excitation cross section. The measured values agree well with theoretical estimates obtained with Olson's model for near-resonant charge exchange. (author)
Abstract (Portuguese)
A secao de choque de emissao de 326.1 nm para o processo de colisao - Cd+ +Na -> Cd(53P1) + Na+ - foi medido na faixa de energia de 1,5 a 4,9 KeV. Ela decresce monotonamente de 5 ate 2x10-15 cm2. Devio a quase degenerescencia em energia este canal apresenta um secao de choque muito acima de todas as outras (com excessao dos canais de troca de carga para 53P0 e 53P2, oas quais sao altamente mataestaveis). Isto permite negligencia o mecanismo de cascata para o aumento da populacao de atomos em 53P1 e, consequentemente, resulta em identificar a secao de choque de emissao de 326.1 nm com a de excitacao do estado 53P1. Os calores medidos concordam bem com estimativas teoricas baseadas no modelo de Olson para troca de carga quase-ressonante. (autor)Additional details
