Monitoring beach sand transport by use of radiogenic heavy minerals

Description

Changes in the natural radiation level on selected sites on the beach of the island of Texel, The Netherlands, were measured simultaneously with changes in beach elevation. It was found that radiometric mapping provides a sensitive method for studying sand transport phenomena. Wind transport of sand resulted in an inverse correlation between changes in radiation level and elevation. Radiometric difference maps confirm the occurrence of wavelet patterns parallel and perpendicular to the prevailing wind direction. (author)
