A natural non-perturbative mechanism for gauge hierarchies

A solution of the problem of large mass ratios in grand unified theories os proposed. Very small masses are generated naturally as non-perturbative effects due to volume-defect like configurations of (effective) Higgs fields. A droplet model is introduced to calculate such effects. (orig.)
