Environmental surveillance. Annual report for calendar year 1980

Description

Environmental surveillance was conducted in the 200 Areas, the B-C cribs controlled area, and the 600 Area retired dry-waste-disposal sites to determine: (1) compliance with DOE requirements; (2) overall impact of site operations on the environment; and (3) adequacy of radioactive waste containment systems. The report describes the 1980 environmental surveillance activities. Environmental data collected during 1980 show that the ambient radiation levels and the radionuclide concentration levels in most uncontrolled areas are in compliance with applicable DOE and Rockwell guidelines. A few sites adjacent to tank farms, burial grounds, and operating facilities were found to have surface contamination that exceeded guidelines and were posted as Radiological Controlled areas during 1980. Data included measurements of radionuclides in air, water, soil and sediments, and vegetation, and measurements of external radiation. Routine radiological surveys were performed on the roadways and on the surface of the waste disposal sites
