The status of the affected Shika nuclear power plant

  • 1. Citizens' Nuclear Information Center, Tokyo (Japan)

Description

On January 1, 2024, a magnitude (M) 7.6 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula, causing significant damage. Hokuriku Electric Power Company's Shika Nuclear Power Plant was also affected by the earthquake. Although the plant had been in long-term shutdown and no severe accident occurred, the various damages that arose raised serious concerns about the safety of nuclear power plants. Additionally, the Noto Peninsula earthquake starkly demonstrated the impossibility of evacuating in the event of a complex disaster where both an earthquake and a nuclear accident occur simultaneously. Abstract (Japanese)
