A new hazard index for the determination of risk potentials of disposed radioactive wastes
Description
The new hazard index is the first which involves the joint consideration of the isotopic composition of the waste, the probability for transport of waste nuclides to man, their radioactivity, and the time-dependent changes of the risk potential all of which are caused by the radioactive buildup and decay processes in the waste after it has entered the biosphere. The new hazard index allows the calculation of risk potentials at a given time of release to the environment and time period of concern thereafter. The nuclide-specific data necessary for the use of the new index are compiled. The equations describing the time-dependent isotopic composition of fuel during reactor operation and of stored waste are presented. The methods and approximations for their solution are discussed.
