An experience with high count rate alpha active waste drums

Description
The estimation of plutonium present in 200 litre waste drums was carried out using segmented gamma ray scanning system based on HPGe detector. Most of the drums were found to contain gram amount of plutonium. In addition to this, few drums were found to contain long lived isotopes such as 60Co, 134Cs, 137Cs etc. Attenuation correction factors for all the gamma rays were determined using a multi gamma ray source of 152Eu. This scanning system was successfully used for monitoring of 110 drums containing high amount of plutonium and other beta gamma active radionuclides. The experience during the scanning of waste drums is reported in the present work. (author)
