Data summary report for fission product release test HI-2

Description

The second in a series of high-temperature fission product release tests was conducted for 20 min at about 17000C in flowing steam. The test specimen, a 20-cm-long section of an H.B. Robinson fuel rod that had been irradiated to a burnup of 28,000 MWd/t, was heated in an induction furnace mounted in a hot cell. Posttest analyses of the furnace, the thermal gradient tube, filters, and other components of the experimental apparatus showed that about 50% of the 85Kr, 137Cs, and 129I were released from the specimen during the test. In addition, approximately 2% of the /sup 110 m/Ag and 125Sb along with smaller fractions of several other radionuclides were measured by gamma spectrometery. Spark-source mass spectrometric data from a limited number of samples showed significant releases of fission product tellurium and molybdenum, as well as structural (zirconium and tin) and furnace (primarily tungsten) materials. Metallographic examination of the fuel specimen revealed extensive fractures in the cladding, essentially complete oxidation to ZrO2, and evidence of fuel-cladding interaction
