The spiral structure of the Large Magellanic Cloud

  • 1. Bochum Univ. (F.R. Germany). Astronomisches Inst.

Description

The spiral structure of the Large Magellanic Cloud has been investigated using the best spiral indicators. A clear spiral pattern emerges from the distribution of the optical H II regions with diameters D>=25 seconds of arc approximately equal to 6pc and the blue supergiants with (U-B)0<=-0.60 (i.e., O-B8 Ia-O to Iab). This structure is reflected in the distribution of supernovae remnants, OB-associations, young open clusters, Wolf-Rayet Stars and X-ray sources and M-supergiants. The spiral features emanate from the 30 Doradus H II-complex as centre and are completely unrelated to the LMC Bar. (Auth.)
