A study on the feasibility of using waste canisters for sewage processing

  • 1. Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology, Navi Mumbai (India)

Description

Sludge Hygeinisation Research Irradiator (SHRI), located at Vadodara was set up as a technology demonstration plant by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in collaboration with Vadodara Municipal Corporation and Govt. of Gujarat. At SHRI, sewage is irradiated at 3 kGy dose of gamma radiation from 60Co for inactivation of pathogens. In DAE there exists a large no. of canisters containing reprocessed waste from reactors in vitrified form. This nuclear waste contains a range of isotopes predominantly 137Cs which is a gamma emitter. A study was taken up to see the feasibility of utilizing such existing canisters for sewage-sludge processing. For this purpose the dose profile was determined in sewage for a tentative arrangement of canisters
