Solving of the half-life problems for the 176Lu nuclear cosmochronometer

Description

176Lu is a radioactive isotope that undergoes beta decay to 176Hf with a half-life of approximately 40 billion years. Therefore, the quantities of 176Lu and 176Hf can be used to measure the ages of events such as supernova explosions that occurred before the formation of the solar system, and the formation of the Earth's and Moon's crusts. However, despite more than 20 groups having measured the half-life of 176Lu, their results have not converged within the margin of error. To resolve this issue, we measured the half-life using a windowless 4π steradian detector. This method avoids the sources of error present in conventional measurement techniques, providing the closest value to the true half-life and the highest accuracy. This advancement is expected to enhance our understanding of the history of the solar system and various celestial bodies using 176Lu. (J.P.N.)

176Luは約400億年の半減期で176Hfにβ崩壊する放射性同位体である。そのため,176Luと176Hfの量から太陽系形成前に発生した超新星爆発や,地球や月の地殻の形成などの年代を測定するために用いることができる。しかし,これまで20グループ以上によって176Luの半減期が計測されたが,誤差の範囲を大きく超えて一致していない。この問題を解決するために,窓なし4π立体角型の検出器で半減期を計測した。この手法では,従来の測定法における誤差の要因を回避しており,最も真の値に近い。また,精度も最も高い。今後,176Luを用いた太陽系や各種天体の歴史の解明が進むと期待される。(著者)
