The hot ion composition in the magnetosphere

Creators

Description

A summary of some recent progress based on hot ion composition measurements on board S3-3, GEOS-1, 2, ISEE-1, PROGNOZ-7, SCATHA and Dynamics Explorer-1 is presented, starting with the low and high latitude boundary layers and continuing inward with the lobes, plasma sheet and ring current regions. The first observations of individual flow vectors of different ion species in the LLBL are described and their interpretation is discussed. The PROGNOZ-7 measurements in the mantle are briefly reviewed. Some major results of the DE-1 observations in the lobes and of the ISEE-1 data taken in the plasma sheet and in the ring current region are presented. The GEOS-1, 2 and PROGNOZ-7 measurements of ring current ions and some consequences are finally summarized
