Status of commercial reprocessing in Europe

Description
If one considers the waste management concept as an entity, one finds the Federal Republic of Germany to be the country with the most comprehensive overall plans for a closed nuclear fuel cycle. Research and development activities have reached an industrial level of maturity, verified by modern technology and many years of experience in operating WAK. On an industrial scale, France is the leading country worldwide, thus documenting the successful operation of plants and techniques for reprocessing spent fuel elements from light water reactors, but also from fast breeders, on the scale necessary for extensive nuclear power programs. The United Kingdom is following the French example in expanding its reprocessing capacity. For the Federal Republic of Germany, reprocessing is the sole waste management technique now available and ready for use. (orig./HP)
Abstract (German)
Betrachtet man das Entsorgungskonzept als Ganzes, so ist die Bundesrepublik Deutschland das Land mit der durchgehendsten Gesamtplanung eines geschlossenen Brennstoffkreislaufs. Die Forschungs- und Entwicklungsarbeiten haben den industriellen Reifegrad erreicht, verifiziert durch moderne Technologie und langjaehrige Betriebserfahrungen der WAK. Grosstechnisch ist auf dem Wiederaufarbeitungsgebiet Frankreich weltweit fuehrend und belegt damit die Beherrschung von Anlagen und Verfahren zur Wiederaufarbeitung bestrahlter Brennelemente aus Leichtwasserreaktoren, aber auch aus Schnellbrueterreaktoren, in dem fuer umfangreiche Kernkraftwerksprogramme notwendigen Masstab. Grossbritannien folgt mit dem Ausbau seiner Wiederaufarbeitungskapazitaet dem franzoesischen Beispiel. Fuer die Bundesrepublik Deutschland ist der Entsorgungspfad mit Wideraufarbeitung sowohl die gesetzlich gebotene als auch die nach dem Erfahrungsstand allein verfuegbare Entsorgungstechnologie.
