Description
The first part of these lectures is an elementary introduction to (super) conformal field theory. In the second part the authors discuss new developments in the construction of fermionic strings from the bosonic string. They show how modular and conformally invariant truncations produce the old and new heterotic strings in a practically unique way, using the classification of Niemeier lattices. These results suggest a natural realization of superconformal field theory in the bosonic string
