Nonlinear stabilization of the lower-hybrid-drift instability by electron resonance broadening

  • 1. Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D. C. 20375

Description

The lower-hybrid-drift instability is shown to be effectively stabilized by electron resonance broadening, especially in finite β plasmas. This saturation mechanism allows steady state turbulence to develop which is crucial to plasma phenomena such as magnetic field line reconnection and collisionless shock waves
