Thermoluminescence dating of glaciers

  • 1. Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, India
  • 2. Glaciology Division, Geological Survey of India, Lucknow, India

Description

Several dust samples obtained from Himalayan glaciers and Antarctic ice have been studied using sediment TL dating procedures. These samples satisfy the basic criterion of pre-depositional sun-bleaching and the sediment equivalent dose has been found to be few hundred rads. The TL in samples fro a 102 metre drill-core from Nehnar glacier (Kashmir) shows an increasing trend with depth. The possibility of extending this application as a technique for absolute dating of glaciers, various experimental difficulties and the environmental dosimetry aspects will be discussed. (author)
