Archaeology in space and time

Current archaeological research at the LBI ArchPro has set a focus on the exploration of landscapes through time. A suite of new non-invasive archaeological prospection methods allow for the large scale and high-resolution detection and documentation of standing and buried archaeological heritage at unprecedented detail and spatial extent. An archaeological landscape can be defined as a stratified volume of certain extent and it is in its nature that the main clue to the chronological ordering of its elements is based on archaeological stratigraphy. The talk will focus on latest developments in regard to the investigation of archaeological sites and complete landscapes presenting a spatio-temporal model based on GIS-based mapping, the principles of archaeological stratigraphy and the integration of an interval based time model.
