A study of outdoor natural radiation exposure in French Polynesia a comparison between a basaltic island (Tahiti) and an atoll (Hao)

Description

The measurement of outdoor natural radiation exposure in French Polynesia gave the following results (cosmic radiation excluded): 22 mrad y-1 outdoors and 27 mrad y-1 indoors on the average, on a basaltic island (Tahiti), this slight difference being due to the nature of the building materials, and 5 mrad y-1 outdoors and 7 mrad y-1 indoors on the average on an atoll (Hao). These values are low compared with values measured in continental France in the same conditions. This is explained by the nature of the subsoil

La mesure de l'irradiation naturelle externe en Polynesie francaise a donne lieu aux resultats suivants (rayonnement cosmique deduit): sur une ile haute (Tahiti), 22 mrad.an-1 a l'exterieur des habitations, 27 a l'interieur en valeur moyenne, cette legere difference etant due a la nature des materiaux; sur un atoll (Hao), 5 mrad.an-1 a l'exterieur des habitations, 7 a l'interieur en valeur moyenne. Ces valeurs sont faibles par rapport a celles mesurees en metropole dans les memes conditions. Ceci s'explique par la nature du sous-sol
