Investigation into pitting corrosion of hyghly alloyed nickel alloys in the sea water

Description

Electrochemical method and long-term full-scale tests were employed to study the pitting of 36 NKhTYu (2.7-3.2% Ti) and 68 NKhVKTYu (9 - 10.5% W) alloys in sea water. The alloys proved to show passivation; however, the former alloy is more inclined to pitting. The pitting is primarily due to silicide formation. The resistance of the alloys to pitting may be increased by the reduction in Si content to 0.1-0.2% or by special treatment aimed at transferring silicon into a solid solution
