In-situ measurement of Cs distribution in the soil

Description
In-situ γ-ray spectrometry can be used as a rapid method for determination of the depth distribution of radioactivity in soil. A modified in-situ γ-ray technique is proposed using an absorbing lead plate placed at various distances in front of the detector in order to alter its angular response. In this way different layers of soil, where the registered γ-rays are emitted from, are scanned. Comparison of the results with laboratory measurements of soil samples for the isotopes 134Cs and 137Cs and for some natural radionuclides shows reasonable agreement. ((orig.))
