Biochemical changes in white rats subjected to sublethal irradiation

Description
Irradiation of white rats with a single dose of 65 rads of gamma radiation caused changes in liver, thymus and plasma 2, 4 and 9 days after irradiation. The amount of RNA is significantly decreased during the whole postirradiation period in both organs. The amount of DNA increased significantly in liver and thymus. Tissue proteins showed insignificant variations, but 9 days after irradiation a significant decrease in the liver was observed and the nitrogen of free amino acids of the liver and thymus showed raised levels 2 and 4 days after irradiation. After 9 days the levels decreased significantly in both organs as well as in the plasma. GPT activity increased in liver and thymus after two days. In liver and plasma this activity increased after 9 days and in the thymus after 4 days. GOT activity in liver, thymus and plasma showed a significant decrease 2 days after irradiation. This activity remained low in the liver and increased in the plasma after 9 days. The weight of the thymus decreased significantly only two days after irradiation. (author)
