Effects of gamma radiation on the larval midgut of the Orienta fruit fly, Dacus doesalis Hendel (Tephritidae: Diptera)

Description
The structure of the untreated oriental fruitfly larval midgut and the hispathological damage associated with radiation exposure were described. Results indicated that the regenerative and epithelial cells of the midgut were sensitive to radiation. Injury to the midgut caused by ionizing radiation increased with dosage and with lapse of time from treatment. Some damage in the regenerative cells was observed at 50 and 75 Gy but this was less severe than that found in the 100 Gy-treated insects. (Auth.). 7 figs., 9 refs
