Development of a flowsheet for purification of off standard PuO2 containing uranium and metallic impurities

Description
A flowsheet was developed for purification of impure plutonium oxide containing gram quantities of uranium and higher levels of undesirable metallic impurities. The procedure involved a leaching step with nitric acid followed by dissolution in HF-HNO3 mixture, precipitation as oxalate and calcination to PuO2 at 500 deg C. The product oxide obtained, met the specifications with respect to uranium content and other impurities. (author)
