Measurements of transient pressures and fragmentation in fuel-coolant interaction: Sn/H2O, UO2H2O and UO2/Na systems
- 1. Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam (India)
Description
Out of pile experiments to study the influence of the thermal characteristics of the system components - Sn/H2O, UO2/H2O and UO2/Na on fuel coolant interactions are described. The role played by the fuel-to-coolant mass ratio, fuel/simulant temperature, coolant temperature and associated fragmentation has been investigated. Experiments were conducted with gram quantities of fuel/simulant and dropping mode of conduct. Transient peak pressures observed in the coolant, thermal to mechanical energy conversion efficiencies estimated from pressure histories and the time delays to pressurisation after contact are reported.
