Investigations for the recovery of plutonium from phosphate analytical waste

  • 1. Fuel Chemistry Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

Investigations were carried out using solvent extraction as well as precipitation methods with a view to recover Pu from analytical waste containing phosphate. Solvent extraction studies were performed using a mixture of 0.3 M HDEHP + 0.1 M P2O5 in xylene and it was observed that more than 99% Pu could be extracted in a single step. However, back extraction or Pu tried with Na2CO3, HNO3, Oxalic acid was poor. The precipitation method used for recovery of Pu involved the adjustment of acidity by adding NaOH and co-precipitation of Pu with Fe(III) already present in the analytical waste. (author)
