Nuclear option in the long-term energy strategy of the Czech Republic
Description
D. Drabova, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Chairman of the State Office for Nuclear Safety, Czech Republic, stated that to secure energy at an affordable price and at the same time to be considerate to the environment, a certain proportion of energy generation in the form of nuclear energy is essential in the long term for the Czech Republic. Nuclear energy will help to reduce the environmental load within the Czech Republic, including a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Nuclear energy will also support the priority of maximum independence of the country from foreign energy sources. She confirmed that the level of public confidence in the existing safety regime and consequently public acceptance of nuclear power seem to be the key issues. Considerable thought is being given to ensuring that the public is and feels that it is contributing to the decision making process. She noted the efforts in strengthening the global safety regime and praised the quality of newly revised IAEA standards and the promising start of the review process both under the Convention on Nuclear Safety and Joint Convention on Safe Management of Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel
