Description
The radioisotope production programme of the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is poised to enter a new era. When the radioisotope production facility of the National Accelerator Centre (NAC), at its new, high-energy cyclotron at Faure in the Cape, comes on stream towards the end of 1988. Not only will this new facility make it possible to produce a much larger variety of radioisotopes than before, as well as radiopharmaceutical products not previously available in South Africa, but in many cases much higher production rates will be possible. In this article some aspects, such as beams and targets, processing, trial runs and tests, target handling and quality control, of the envisaged radioisotope production programme at Faure are discussed
