IRSN and electrical fires. High-intensity research
Description
Between 2018 and 2020, around 200 fires involving flames or smoke occurred at French nuclear power plants. About half of them were caused by short-circuits, overheated cables or arcing. A significant proportion of these fires occurred in electrical cabinets and switchboards. The few that did develop were brought under control. IRSN is carrying out tests on its experimental research platform at Cadarache (Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region) to accurately characterize electrical fires and their propagation in configurations representative of nuclear facility premises. The aim is to assess the consequences of this type of fire and validate simulation tools to improve safety analyses of nuclear facilities.
