Determination of attention coefficient of low carbon steel material nitrided by 1.4 mBar pressure and Pb sputtering
Description
Radiation shielding is a material that serves to protect and withstand radiation exposure to radiation workers, the general public, and other specialized equipment. Radiation shielding materials require materials that have high radiation absorption capabilities and are easy to mold. Lead (Pb) has a high atomic number and density that can be used as X-ray radiation shielding, but this material is difficult to shape. This study aims to determine the value of radiation attenuation coefficient in materials that have high absorption ability and are easy to mold. Low carbon steel that does not have good radiation retaining properties will be modified to have good radiation retaining properties by surface treatment. Therefore, a study was conducted to determine the attenuation coefficient value of low carbon steel material from Pb nitriding and sputtering. In this study, plasma nitriding was carried out with a time variation of 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, and 5 hours with a pressure of 1.4 mBar and a temperature of 400 °C. In the sputtering process, a time of 40 minutes, a current of 10 mA, with a voltage of 5 Kv and using 100 % Lead (Pb) as the target material, then a radiation chop test using Geiger Muller to obtain the attenuation coefficient value and a composition test using X-ray fluorescence to obtain the elemental composition of the material. The results obtained the value of the attenuation coefficient of the plasma nitrided material of 0.1330/mm or increased by 16 %, for example, the value of the attenuation coefficient of the plasma nitrided material of 0.1330/mm or increased by 16 %.
