First results of bulk quenching factor measurements of CaWO4 at mK temperatures with monoenergetic neutrons

Description

The CRESST dark matter detectors, based on CaWO4 scintillating crystals, are able to discriminate gamma and beta background by the simultaneous measurement of the light and phonon signal produced by particle interactions, due to the different light output (quenching factor) for nuclear and electron recoils. At the TUM in Garching, two types of experiments are being performed to measure the quenching factors of the different nuclei (O,Ca,W) of the detector crystal at ∝40 mK: a) Measurements with standard neutron sources (241Am-Be and 252Cf). b) Measurements with a monoenergetic neutron beam and fixed scattering angle at a newly installed set-up at the Maier-Leibnitz-Beschleuniger-Laboratorium in Garching. Results of the first beamtime with monoenergetic neutrons are discussed
